Final comment from me... This episode triggered a memory of Brighton's attempt in 1997 to host it's own version of the Love Parade, a kind of free party adjacent attempt to get dance music in to the public realm.

Hazy memories of bemused looking daytrippers, as we cruised down the seafront on the back of a flat bed with a massive sound system.

One of the other factors that played into the free party scene was the ability to squat. Squatting hadn't yet been legislated out of existence. Squat parties were the fixed address sibling to travelling sound systems. Brixton's Cooltan Arts Centre was probably the apogee of this - https://www.urban75.org/brixton/features/cooltan.html

A nice companion piece to Free Party is Vinca Petersen's "No System", a collection of her photography, documenting the European free party scene.
