As a listener and viewer, Boiler Room has got to be the easiest entity to boycott in the history of entities. Some of their partnerships, curation, and parties have been just disastrous over the last 5 years. Good memories from the early days though

Great discussion. Thanks for synthesising the debate for those of us who aren’t wedded to the Instagram discourse and don’t log in anymore.

Definitely think it’s worth looking at the experience of Kneecap in terms of successfully boycotting and forcing changes at some festivals. And artists like CMAT too. Who really bravely flew the flag on making ethical decisions around this stuff.

Unfortunately they hit into just how intertwined the contemporary music industry is with problematic financial entities and ended up in a bind over playing some festivals and not others.

A very parallel experience and one with lessons for dance music perhaps.

Would love to hear a future episode that sketches out the network of places and festivals that are more politically independent and carving out spaces beyond the market. The ones we had in Dublin are certainly dead or in decline but it’d be a great mapping exercise and process to channel the difficulties. Could include smaller digital stations too.
