Great episode. Some rambling thoughts to add from me.
There will always be a cohort of passive music listeners who don't really pay for music, in the past that was fulfilled by just turning on the radio. Spotify has I think meant that a large cohort of people who would have paid for music in the past, now don't really pay anything. To try and solve this we would probably need Spotify to completely change their fee system or a new platform to get big (which I've not got much hope for). But thought a system where you get one or two plays of every track / album in the subscription fee, but if you want to play multiple times you pay a bit more to "buy" the music. This means fans can pay a bit more and the passive listeners aren't affected. Caveat: I've done no research so a platform that does this may already exist π
reminds me a bit of bandcamp! i guess the issue is that spotify appeals to the masses and if it changed its business strategy, it wouldn't be able to compete with its competitors like amazon and apple. truthfully, it would be nice to see spotify take that 360 to prioritise artists and independent music but it would seem unlikely sadly considering how much money they know they make at the moment
Lol I hadn't ever clocked that Bandcamp had a stream limit π. Likely because I still use Spotify as my main platform to listen and only really use Bandcamp to buy stuff and get notifications for new releases.
